How are the roots doing?
The quality of the putting surface is direcetly related to the quality of the root system. That is why the turf maintenance team punches holes in the greens to allow oxygen into the root system and allow them to breath and continue to survive.
From the months of September - June the roots will actively grow.  Then during the hot months of July and August the roots go into survival mode and will get much shorter.  We have seen great root development on the greens on both courses throughout the Spring. The more root structure there is, the less explosive your ball marks will be because the roots will help hold the ball mark together.  That is part of the reason why ball marks become more explosive in August.  Below is a picture of the roots on 9 green West and how they continued to develop from May 30 - June 30.
